Lantern: overdose and care, county by county
Lantern is a free, quiet public-health map that runs in your browser and works offline. It maps overdose death rates, opioid prescribing, mental health shortage areas and social vulnerability for every county in all 50 states and D.C., and shows census tracts for six states. Every layer says whether it is a modelled estimate, a claims count, a provisional count or a designation.
- Overdose death rate by county, 2003 to 2021, from NCHS model-based estimates, with a trend line for every county and the state behind it
- Medicare Part D opioid prescribing rate, long-acting share and year-over-year change, 2024
- HRSA mental health shortage area scores and CDC/ATSDR Social Vulnerability Index 2022
- County rank within its state and the country, side-by-side comparison of two counties, shareable links to any view
These are area statistics about places, never about people. If you or someone you know needs help, call or text 988, or visit findtreatment.gov.
